Analysis: Good use of color isn't easy. This design does a great job of utilizing color without being over the top. The blue and purple hues work well together and the hints of red highlight important areas. Also of note here, the host is clearly mentioned, but gives up the main portion of visual real estate to the guest. Smart.

Bracket Busting

How the NCAA Tournament and Podcasting Are Surprisingly Similar

The NCAA men's basketball tournament is an annual sports ritual. And some of the traits that make March Madness so special can be applied to podcasting. (Note: We realize we took a little creative license here, but it's certainly timely.) 🏀🏀🏀🏀

  • Content Variety: Hoops teams are all different and that’s part of the fun. Some rely on defense, others like to run and gun, and some do a little bit of both. The fun with podcasts is that they too cover diverse topics ranging from sports to true crime, religion, science, comedy, and more.
  • Competition: An element of competition exists in both. Podcasters compete for listenership, ratings, and ad revenue. Teams in the NCAA tournament compete for victories and the chance to survive and advance.
  • Audience Engagement: Engagement is the name of the game in podcasting and is the key to acquiring and keeping an audience. There’s no sporting event in the U.S. that has as much fan engagement than the NCAA tournament. Fans fill out brackets, take vacation days to watch the first rounds, and travel to see their favorite team play.
  • Underdogs and Surprises: Unpredictability is a big reason for the NCAA tournament’s popularity. The tourney has a long history of underdog stories, surprising upsets, and buzzer beaters. Podcasting can see unexpected shows rise to popularity or niche topics gain a significant following. Underdogs have a shot in the podcast industry too.
