In today’s email:
I see a lot of people starting to talk about their top most listened to lists to wrap up the year.
And I'm seeing some podcast hosts even reward those who share their Top 10 list with the host's podcast in the number one position.
That's an awesome way to reward your top listeners for sure!
But how important is being listed in these lists?
I would say, if none of your listeners have you listed at all, it's simply a reflection point for you as the host.
Here at year end, it's a perfect time to reflect on who you are serving and ask the right questions about the content you are creating for them.
Do I know the kind of person who would share that I am listed in their Top 5?
Have I heard from real listeners who shared how it helped them?
Do I know why my content connects with them so well?
Are there podcasts listed that are a better version of what I am trying to do?
How can I become the kind of podcast that my listeners would be proud to share with their followers?
Do I feel like creating the podcast is effortless and easy, or like I am pushing a boulder up a hill?
Am I forcing anything? Or am I authentically showing up?
I hope these questions help you take a moment to reflect, reset, and pursue the right goals moving into the new year.

Episode Length: What Really Matters (and What Doesn’t) How long should your podcast episodes be? There’s no universal rule — the ideal length is simply as long as your content stays valuable. Don’t stretch an episode to fill time, and don’t cut it short if the substance isn’t there yet. While most listeners prefer episodes between 15–60 minutes, data shows huge variation across genres. What matters more is consistency, a clear format, and releasing episodes your audience can rely on. Bottom...

Podcast Diversity Report Reveals Major Gaps A new USC Annenberg Inclusion Initiative study shows that top U.S. podcasts still lack meaningful diversity—especially compared to leading TV, film, and music. Key findings: 64% of hosts on top 2024 U.S. podcasts are men. Video podcasts skew even more male, with the biggest imbalance in business & tech—92% male-hosted. Women-hosted shows still feature mostly male guests (54%). True crime is the only category with a female-majority of hosts (53%),...
